By teaming up with EMMI, SAMSUNG and SAP we invite you to work on a real-life challenge. The scenario is characterized by the fusion of automation and digitalization.

Industrial production requirements are changing. There is an increasing demand for products that match customer expectations precisely. At the same time, companies face growing pressure to manufacture at ever more competitive prices. To adapt to these new conditions, the fields of systems engineering, production IT, and business systems will need to integrate to a higher degree than ever before, creating new means of production in the process.

What will production processes of the future look like, and what will be their defining features?

Companies today need to fit into a new world that includes Big Data, Internet-of-Things and Mobility. This is additive to their traditional challenges of designing and delivering the best products. A key element of Industry 4.0 is therefore the smart factory.

This workshop will introduce an production excellence case at EMMI Swiss in their milk and yoghurt domain. Let us demonstrate the essentials to get sensors integrated, UI apps and dashboards developed and SAMSUNG mobile/wearable devices connected to SAP`s Platform-as-a-Service. We`ll provide an API briefing, data sets, and sample code to get you started easily.

Dynamic visualization and prediction of M&A events for about 500 companies using high volume structured and unstructured data provided by EY. Develop & deploy scalable apps on OpenStack/DOCKER/Cloudfoundry using ApacheSpark, Hadoop, NoSQL, Python, Scala, Java, Node.js, R, IBMWatson provided by IBM.

EY and IBM are hosting a workshop to program a software/tool/application for the dynamic visualization of M&A relevant information on time series of financial data for a pool of ~500 companies. The M&A relevant information will be extracted, classified and associated to each given company by algorithmic analysis of a high volume database of structured and unstructured data. The participants will then test the performance of their M&A classifier on new data and provide hints for machine learning based business decision making.

The participants are free to choose their preferred technology to develop the algorithm and visualization. Developers can benefit from a big repository of powerful tools and API’s available in the IBM Cloud, which is open by design and supports any open source technology or framework (e.g. Apache Spark, R, SciPy, NumPy, Java, Node.js, D3). The final application has to be deployed to the IBM Cloud - either on a virtual machine, in a DOCKER container or on the Platform as a Service Cloud based on Cloudfoundry. IBM technicians for all these technologies will be on site 24/7 to support you.

After this workshop you will be able to deploy scalable machine learning applications on OpenStack, Docker and Cloudfoundry PaaS Clouds written in any language. You'll gain insights in ApacheSpark, Hadoop, NoSQL, Docker, Node.js and Python. Afterwards we'll concentrate on scalable data analysis and machine learning based on OpenSource technologies like Apache Spark and R.

Retail Innovation: Kiosk of the Future //

Time: Friday, 21:00 - 21:45 or 22:00 - 22:45

Room: Basic

Valora and Aduno Group have teamed up to bring about the next mobile innovation in kiosk retailing. Supported by Auto-ID Labs and GS1, the "Retail Innovation"-workshop allows developers to build their own mobile app connecting to Valora's product data and Aduno Group's payment terminal. Together with you, we are looking forward to building apps that connect consumers and Valora through revolutionary new ideas.

Retail Innovation: “Kiosk of the Future”

With mobile applications on the rise, the retail industry is on the verge to a new era. Today, eCommerce still accounts for less than 10% of total retail sales – leaving the majority of the industry disconnected from our digital lives. Barrier for mobile apps in retailing is the fact that most app developers today struggle with a lack of standards as well as access to APIs and datasets.

The Auto-ID Labs have teamed up with Valora, Aduno Group, and GS1 to break down these barriers in order to build revolutionary apps that shape the “Kiosk of the Future”: New retail apps help consumers to make better shopping decisions, discover new products, find alternatives, track and evaluate your shopping behavior (e.g. quantified self), recommend products, get direct links to brands, improve your health, save money and CO2, find bargains and discounts close to you, etc. Together with you at HackZurich 2015, we want to become creative and bring entertaining ideas to reality: Be it a game, health or news app, a new kind of loyalty scheme or something that you always wanted to see in retail, we are looking forward to seeing your innovation. At HackZurich, we allow developers to prove their app in the k-Kiosk at the HackZurich area.

Valora Group – One of Europe´s largest Kiosk groups

The Valora Group runs businesses which are all operating in high volume consumer markets. Activities are focused on those European markets where modern, mobile lifestyles have become widespread:
  • largest kiosk group in Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg and Austria
  • famous for brands like k-kiosk, Spettacolo, avec. P&B, Brezelkönig, Ditsch, Naville, ok.-, etc.
  • over 900’000 customer contacts every day only in Switzerland.
  • outlet network at high frequency locations with approx 2’600 stores in 4 countries offer a huge opportunity to app developers who can leverage upon this infrastructure and digitalize the way consumers engage with Valora.

Aduno Group – the smart way to pay

The Aduno Group offers the entire range of products and services for cashless payment from a single source: from card issuing activities (Viseca Card Services SA) and card acceptance, to payment terminals (Aduno SA), personal loans and leasing (cashgate AG) as well as security guarantees (AdunoKaution AG). As a leading company for private and commercial clients the Aduno Group is a fair and transparent partner. The Aduno Group is wholly owned by the largest Swiss retail and cantonal banks (Raiffeisen Group, all the cantonal banks, Migros Bank, Bank Coop and a number of commercial and private banks).

GS1 – a global standard

GS1 is an international organization focused on standards for global commerce. GS1 is responsible for introducing barcodes to the retail industry almost 40 years ago. The current GS1 Management Board comprises executives from Wal-Mart, Amazon, Tesco, Google, Nestle, Coca-Cola, Walgreens, and more. GS1 – being a global standards organization – is interested in fostering innovation and evaluating needs for new global standards and interfaces. Currently, GS1 is covering 110 countries, serving over a million companies across the world, executing more than six billion transactions daily using GS1 standards.

Car Dating – Team the perfect couple! //

Time: Friday, 21:00 - 21:45 or 22:00 - 22:45

Room: Newton 1009

We at AMAG – one of Europe's largest car dealerships – are looking forward to building a kind of "Tinder for Cars" together with you.

We absolutely love cars – so do you? AMAG believes that finding your next car should become as easy and entertaining as finding a matching date through Tinder: Your team will develop mobile apps that present cars in new, unprecedented ways in order to convince viewers to take a test drive: Love at first sight!

Online sales has reached ca retailing quite some time ago, especially in the form of used car platforms. But … buying a car online is a tedious and boring thing. You'll have to select tons of tecnical features you maybe don't even really know what they are for and then you'll scroll endlessly through long lists of cars that are presented in uninspiring ways. (Wanna see an example? Then have a look at our present site. Ouch! Please don't tell anybody.)

So: We need your help! We want you to create a mobile app that pairs our customers off with the car that matches their needs perfectly. Make them find the needle in the haystack – effortlessly. Using that app should be convenient, it should be about positive emotions, should be surprising and should definitely be fun. Your solution will (probably) have to find ways
  • to recognize the users needs and preferences in as few steps as possible (at least unless this process is a fun one for the user)
  • to translate those needs into car specifications and find the 'best matches' in our large stock of used an new cars
  • to present those 'best matches' in an attractive way so that they shine at their very best
  • to animate the user to immediate action (call us, book a test drive, make a reservation or else).
In effect we are thinking about some kind of car dating site: find love at first sight! Our API let's you tap in a stock of about 3'000 real cars with all their specifications. Have a glance (API documentation). Sounds exciting? Then join our workshop, we are looking forward to meeting you!

Mobility in the era of digital natives //

Time: Saturday, 11:00 - 11:30

Location: Auditorium

Mobility begins in the mind and doesn’t stop in the timetable.

The trips of the Swiss start at home and end at work, the resort or in the mountains. They are part of a journey and not as end in itself.

Not everybody has the same preconditions to use the means of transport. It’s our destiny to provide the best information at the right time to the travelers, in order for them to travel comfortably, without any obstacles, either for business or recreational purposes.

Information about trains, rolling stocks, line-up of the wagons and the stations are available for HackZurich.

Using the provided data you could provide applications in the context of comfortable travelling. How can trips be planned so that only trains with low-floor access are used? Which stations should I use to change trains so that the height of the platform allows entering the train without steps. For other people it’s important to have a power socket or a place to put their bike.

SBB provides the data on their website: http://www.sbb.ch/opendata.
  • Official timetable (for this and next year)
  • Line up of the wagons
  • Equipment of wagons (power sockets, number of seats, weight, length, family department, bike hooks,…)
  • Information on stations and plattforms
  • geoposition
  • Place of the sector plates
  • Platform height
  • Place of the stop line of the train (Head of train will be there at stop)
